A Tale to Tell: My FRIEND

“He’s not my friend, he just happen to be someone I know” said James in a thirty-minute conversation with his stepmom, Mrs. Michael. Here, we are talking about someone who has been a friend of James for five years (or like he said, “someone he knew”) 
We often introduce people by putting across, “meet my friend XYZ” and then the curious me begin to make an enquiry about the concept of friendship. There is this oft-cited quote, ”show me your friend and I will tell you who you are”. In this present age, where the number of likes we get on our various social media platform and the vast number of people around us define our value, many are hidden in the dark, while trying to find themselves. In the quest to fit in, the average person would rather renounce his identity and remain hidden beneath the shadow of another person. What we do not realize is that our everyday fight is not just to be a superhuman, because being human is super on its own.
       The word friend can be traced to its Old English origin, freond, which means “one attached to another by feelings of personal regard and preference”. The first time I came across the accurate meaning of a friend was in the bible. “Iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend” [AMP], Proverbs 27 v 17. We need people who will sharpen us and we will be equally available to sharpen them. Until recently. I always had the notion that to whomever the position of friendship is effected upon, there should be a trace of similarity between the individuals involved and that is true but sometimes you don’t need another you to do life big. We’ve all got our differences and we should cherish that in our friendships. This might seem cliché, but choose your friends wisely and learn to stick around.

So next time you are asked who your friend is, you might need to take a deep breath, reflect on the question and make your response crystal clear. So, cheers to a healthy and energetic friendship!!!
